Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 23 Sep 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that author citation given as Carex molesta Mack. (North American Flora 18(3): 151. 1931) in TROPICOS (with the comment "prev. as 'C. modesta' Mack. in Trillia 9: 20. 1930 as nom. nud.") and as Mackenzie ex Bright, Trillia. 9: 4, 20. 1930 (as Carex modesta) in Flora North America, so that author citation needs to be checked.
Correspondence 2 6 Feb 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates: that the author citation for Carex molesta presents a difficult problem that may never be resolved conclusively; that Bright (in Trillia 9:4, 20. 1930) published "Carex modesta" with a very superficial diagnosis, and that if allowed to stand as a valid publication and not a nomen nudum, it would be an illegitimate later homonym of Carex modesta J. Gay (Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique ser. 2, 10:304. 1838), unless it is considered to be a spelling error for "molesta" (see following); that Mackenzie (Mack. in Authors of Plant Names) appears to have published Carex molesta in North American Flora 18(3):151 (1931); that a number of authors and references (International Plant Names Index-Gray Card Index, IPNI-Index Kewensis, Flora North America) accept that Bright validly published Carex molesta (before Mackenzie's 1931publication but ascribing it to Mackenzie) with the assumption that his "modesta" (in 3 places) was simply a spelling error on his part for Mackenzie's "molesta", thus yielding "Mack. ex Bright"; that other authors and references (Voss, A Michigan Flora; Gray's Manual; Britton & Brown) cite Mackenzie only; and that the The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author follows what currently is in this Index, citing Mack. ex Bright. [Therefore, author citation retained as Carex molesta Mack. ex Bright in this Index, 7 Feb 2008.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Peter Zika, Andrew Hipp, & Joy Mastrogiuseppe see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Carex molesta Mack. ex Bright is to be mentioned only in a note under the genus, as having been collected only once in CA, as an urban weed, in 1958. [Because it has not been collected in California in over 50 years, it is considered to be an historical urban weed; even if it were considered a current urban weed, it would not be included in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].]
