Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 1 Dec 2004 e-mail from Misa Ward see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence appended verbatim is pertinent to The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] account: "Known from only one confirmed extant occurrence at Pitkin Marsh, with fewer than 1000 plants as of 1993; three historical occurrences extirpated by wetland drainage and spraying of chemical effluents. Threatened by competition with other plants, and potentially by altered hydrology. See Memoirs of the Torrey Botanical Club 1:9 (1889) for original description, and Leaflets of Western Botany 8(7):178-180 (1957) for taxonomic discussion."
Correspondence 2 15 Jan 2013 e-mail from Bruce Baldwin, including forward e-mail from Peter Zika, author of Carex in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 includes reference to a paper Peter Zika and B. L. Wilson (Madroño 59: 171-180. 2012) in which it is shown that extensive overlap between Carex albida L. H. Bailey and Carex lemmonii W. Boott in characters of the perigynium, achene, inflorescence, and foliage preclude recognition as distinct species, so that the former is treated as a synonym of the latter, which is the earlier name.
