Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 states, verbatim: It appears that the genus name is Greek and the two components of the compound epithet (di- & -stachys or -stachyus) are also Greek. Among the examples of compound adjectival epithets based on -stachys (= -stachyus) given by Stearn is polystachyus meaning "with many spikes". I think, similarly, distachyus (alternatively spelled distachys) would correctly mean "with two spikes". Checking into various places where this name is published I have found the following versions: distachyon (protologue only), distachyos, distachyum, distachyus, distachys. There might even be others. The only general agreement seems to be that Linnaeus got it wrong! I am inclined to go along with Stearn's spelling(s) in the last two versions, contrary to Flora North America, and arbitrarily choose distachys, to save the space of one letter. [Although the Editor of this Index agrees with Greenhouse, he thinks that it would be better to adopt the spelling used in Flora North America ("distachyos"), in part because there is no clear, correct resolution, and in part because he believes that there already are too many essentially trivial nomenclatural differences between Flora North America and Jepson Flora Project, differences that for example must be dealt with when attempting to automate the discovery of non-trivial differences between the two projects. Therefore, spelling of epithet changed to Aponogeton distachyos L. f., from Aponogeton distachyon L. f. previously in this Index, 1 Apr 2008.] | |||||
