Correspondence 1 | 26 Feb 2007 e-mail from Fred Hrusa, in response to inquiry from Editor of this Index see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that CDFA has several specimens of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis from plants that were "spontaneous" in CA, evidently all or for the most part from cultivated and/or urban situations, but that in any case there does appear to be evidence that some plants at least are persisting outside active cultivation in the state (e.g.: Solano Co., Ryer Island levee, Rio Vista, 1960; Riverside Co., abandoned orange orchard, 1979; San Diego Co., "Covering ground & climbing into shrubs and trees, 1/2 acre on hillside at rear of 430 Canyon, Solana Beach.", 1966), although the conditions under which they evidently occur (cultivated and/or urban situations) do not qualify them for "full treatment" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]. [Therefore, although a Current Status of Jepson Flora Project-4 appears to be most appropriate at this time, there is reason to believe that the plants may be expected in wildlands, where they may or may not eventually become naturalized, so pop up here and there and/or persist in conditions outside of active cultivation, so that "partial treatment" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] is appropriate.]
Correspondence 2 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Michael A. Vincent see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that in California plants of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis spread rapidly by st tubers but produce no fruit. [Therefore, although plants of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis evidently are not reproducing sexually in CA, they are doing so vegetatively (i.e., asexually) in a way that could lead to occurrences in conditions that would have qualified them for "full treatment" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], where they presumably would continue to reproduce vegetatively and therefore qualify as naturalized in CA, thus confirming "partial treatment" in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] as plants that may be expected in wildlands.]
