Initial Editorial Comments in no way mentioned in Munz, Munz Supplement, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]; "Planted as an ornamental and establishing itself on dumps and in waste places." in Munz Southern California Flora
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to Dale McNeal, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author of various Liliaceae excluding Agave, Agave americana L. does not occur in the wild outside of Mexico according to Gentry (1982. Agaves of Continental North America. Univ. of Arizona Press, Tucson, AZ).
Correspondence 2 7 Mar 2005 e-mail from James L. Reveal see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Agave americana L. subsp. americana var. expansa (Jacobi) Gentry, the only expression of this species in CA, is cultivated and might have escaped and might be naturalized in the southern part of the state, but Reveal [The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author] has no direct evidence this is so.
