Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 Feb 2008, from Editor of this Index and author of treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 There is only one record in CCH, JEPS22883, collected in 1959, in Lake Co., about 2 mi nw of Salminas Resort, in shade along a rivulet. Although such conditions would qualify for inclusion in the flora according to criteria employed by Jepson Flora Project, the lack of additional and subsequent collections suggests that the plants were occurring as waifs, and that the plants have not spread. Whether or not the population represented by JEPS22883 persists is unknown, and Dave Keil (e-mail of 12 Feb 2008, archived in Eudora mailbox "done ICPN".) has indicated that although the plants have been widely cultivated in water gardens and probably are able to establish in suitable habitats in California (such as at the site of JEPS22883), he has not seen them in such places. [Therefore, it seems most appropriate at this time to consider this taxon an historical waif in CA, and therefore to not treat it in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], in that it evidently has not been observed outside cultivation, even as a waif, since 1959.]
