Flower bisexual, radial, parts in 4's or 5's, except pistil 1; sepals fused, persistent; petals fused, persistent or deciduous, corolla generally without fringes or scales on inner surface, sinuses between lobes generally unappendaged; stamens epipetalous, alternate corolla lobes; ovary superior, chamber 1, placentas parietal, often intruding

Genera in family: ± 80 genera, 900 species: worldwide; some cultivated (Eustoma , Exacum , Gentiana )

Species in genus: ± 300 species: temp to subarctic and alpine Am, Eurasia
Etymology: (Gentius, king of ancient Illyria, who might have found medicinal value in the plants)

Leaves: basal ± 0; cauline many, ± evenly spaced, generally > 0.8 X internodes, 12–60 mm, 7–38 mm wide, elliptic to round; base sheaths at mid-stem generally > 5 mm; tips obtuse to acute
Inflorescence terminal; flowers 1–5 (also sometimes solitary at 1–3 nodes)
Flower: calyx 17–25(35) mm, lobes lance-elliptic, rarely ± leaf-like, not ciliate, obtuse to acute; corolla 35–50 mm, deep blue, lobes 7–14 mm, oblong-obovate to round, short-acuminate, sinus appendages divided ± to base into several thread-like parts
Seed winged
Ecology: UNCOMMON. Wet mtn meadows
Elevation: 1200–1900 m.
Bioregional distribution: Klamath Ranges, Outer North Coast Ranges
Distribution outside California: to sw Oregon
