Annual to tree
Leaves basal or cauline, alternate to whorled, simple to compound
Inflorescence: 1° inflorescence a head, each resembling a flower, 1–many, generally arrayed in cymes, generally subtended by ± calyx-like involucre; flowers 1–many per head
Flowers bisexual, unisexual, or sterile, ± small, of several types; calyx 0 or modified into pappus of bristles, scales, or awns, which is generally persistent in fruit; corolla radial or bilateral (rarely 0), lobes generally (0)4–5; stamens 4–5, anthers generally fused into cylinder around style, often appendaged at tips, bases, or both, filaments generally free, generally attached to corolla near throat; pistil 1, ovary inferior, 1-chambered, 1-seeded, style 1, branches 2, generally hair-tufted at tip, stigmas 2, generally on inside of style branches
Fruit: achene, cylindric to ovoid, generally deciduous with pappus attached
Genera in family: ± 1300 genera, 21,000 species (largest family of dicots): worldwide. Largest family in CA. Also see tribal key to CA genera: Strother 1997 Madroño 44(1):1–28. See glossary p. 25 for illustrations of general family characteristics.

Leaves simple or pinnate, opposite or alternate, dotted with embedded oil glands
Inflorescence: heads radiate or discoid, solitary or in few-headed, often leafy-bracted, often open cymes; peduncles slender, with leaf-like or scale-like bracts; involucre bell-shaped to cylindric; phyllaries in 3 series, outer << others, free, 2 inner ± equal, fused or free, gland-dotted; receptacle flat, bearing short, fringed scales
Ray flowers 0–few; corollas yellow to red
Disk flowers few–many; corollas yellow to orange; style tips tapered
Fruit obconic, ribbed; pappus of scales dissected into slender bristles
Species in genus: 10 species: sw US, n Mex

Subshrub, glabrous or short-rough-hairy; odor unpleasant
Stems many, 3.5–6 dm, generally much-branched
Leaves generally alternate, sessile, 8–25 cm, ovate to oblanceolate, coarsely toothed or shallowly lobed; blade with 1–2 glands near base, 1 near tip
Inflorescence: heads radiate (rarely discoid); peduncles 6–15 cm, swollen beneath heads, bracts leaf-like; involucre cylindric; outer phyllaries 12–22, 5–8 mm, linear, long-acuminate, each with 1 central gland; inner phyllaries ± 20, 15–18 mm, linear, fused below, gland-dotted
Ray flowers (0)7–13; ligule 8–9 mm, yellow to red-orange
Disk flowers many; corollas yellow 8–10 mm
Fruit 5–7 mm, hairy; pappus scales 15–20, 8–10 mm, each dissected into 5–9 bristles
Chromosomes: 2n=26
Ecology: Dry, sandy slopes and washes
Elevation: 600–1550 m.
Bioregional distribution: Mojave Desert
Distribution outside California: s Nevada, nw Arizona
Flowering time: May–Jun, Sep–Nov
