Leaves alternate, 2-ranked, generally linear; sheath generally open; ligule membranous or hairy, at blade base

Spikelet: glumes generally 2; florets (lemma, palea, flower) 1many; lemma generally membranous, sometimes glume-like; palea generally ± transparent, ± enclosed by lemma

Spikelet: glumes subequal, > floret, membranous, lower 1-veined, upper 13-veined; floret 1, bisexual, breaking above glumes; lemma rounded on back, membranous, short bristly at base, minutely scabrous and awned near tip, obscurely 35-veined, awn straight, flexible; palea ± = lemma
Species in genus: ± 3 species: temp Eur, Asia. Cult for revegetation
