Perennial to trees, from membranous bulb, fibrous corm, scaly rhizome, or erect caudex
Stem generally underground
Leaves generally basal, often withering early, alternate, generally ± linear
Inflorescence various, generally bracted
Flower generally bisexual, generally radial; perianth often showy, segments generally 6 in two petal-like whorls (outer sometimes sepal-like), free or fused at base; stamens 6 (or 3 + generally 3 ± petal-like staminodes), filaments sometimes attached to perianth or fused into a tube or crown; ovary superior or inferior, chambers 3, placentas generally axile, style generally 1, stigmas generally 3
Fruit: generally capsule, loculicidal or septicidal (berry or nut)
Genera in family: ± 300 genera, 4600 species: especially ± dry temp and subtropical; many cultivated for ornamental or food; some TOXIC. Here includes genera sometimes treated in Agavaceae, Amaryllidaceae, and other families.

Stem: 25–90 cm, slender, ± scapose
Leaves basal, 19–55 mm, 4–14 mm wide, grass-like, keeled, ± glaucous
Inflorescence: raceme or panicle, terminal, bracted; flowers 20–70+
Flower: perianth segments 6 in 2 petal-like whorls, free; stamens 6, epipetalous; ovary superior, chambers 3, style 1, stigma 3-lobed
Fruit: capsule, short-stalked, loculicidal
Seeds ovoid, flat, black
Species in genus: 4 species: CA, OR
Etymology: (Namesake unknown)

Inflorescence dense; branches generally 2–3
Flower 6–8 mm; perianth parts elongating as anthers mature, ± spreading above middle, equal, white to yellowish, outer parts ± 1 mm wide, linear, blunt, inner parts ± 2 mm wide, ovate, acute; stamens ± = perianth (outer 3 at first > perianth, opening before inner 3)
Fruit 6–9 mm, oblong
Chromosomes: n=26
Ecology: Wet meadows, bogs, rocky seeps
Elevation: 500–2300 m.
Bioregional distribution: Northwestern California, Cascade Range, n High Sierra Nevada
Distribution outside California: sw Oregon
Synonyms: Schoenolirion a. Durand
