Annual, perennial herb, carnivorous, of moist or aquatic habitats
Stem a caudex (Pinguicula ) or filamentous with alternate or whorled branch systems in place of leaves (Utricularia )
Leaves 0 or in basal rosette, simple
Inflorescence: raceme, spike, 1-flowered or scapose
Flower bisexual; calyx 2-lipped, generally 4–5-lobed; corolla 2-lipped, 5-lobed, spurred at base, lower lip arched and generally pouched upward, blocking throat; fertile stamens 2, epipetalous; ovary superior, chamber 1, placenta generally free-central; stigma unequally 2-lobed, ± sessile
Fruit: capsule, round, generally 2-valved (sometimes irregularly dehiscent)
Seeds generally many, small
Genera in family: 4 genera, 200 species: worldwide, especially tropical.
Annual, perennial herb, generally aquatic
Stem submersed or creeping, uncoiling at tip, sometimes with claw-like appendages, with generally alternate green branch systems ("leaves") of ± linear or thread-like segments; bladders borne on stem or "leaves" trap small organisms when entrance hairs triggered; terminal, overwintering buds dispersed in some species
Leaves: true leaves 0
Inflorescence: raceme (rarely 1-flowered), bracted, emergent
Flower: calyx lips entire; corolla generally yellow, lower lip entire or 3-lobed, generally blocking throat, hairy, red-spotted, upper lip ± entire
Fruit generally circumscissile (or opening irregularly)
Species in genus: ± 180 species: worldwide, especially. tropical
Etymology: (Latin: little bag, from bladders)
