Leaves generally basal and cauline, alternate, generally simple; stipules 0
Inflorescence: generally raceme
Flower bisexual; sepals 4, free; petals (0)4, free, generally white or yellow, often clawed; stamens generally (2,4)6, generally 4 long, 2 short; ovary 1, superior, chambers generally 2, septum membranous, connecting 2 parietal placentas, style 1, stigma simple or 2-lobed
Fruit: generally capsule ("silique") with 2 deciduous valves, sometimes breaking transversely or indehiscent
Seeds 1–many per chamber
Genera in family: 300+ genera, 3000+ species: worldwide, especially cool regions; some cultivated for food (especially Brassica, Raphanus ) and ornamental

Leaves in basal rosettes and cauline, simple, entire to lobed
Flower: petals clawed, generally cream to orange; stigma 2-lobed
Fruit narrow, round, 4-sided, or ± flattened (generally parallel to septum); style 0.2–5 mm
Seeds 1–2 rows per chamber, 1–4 mm, often ± winged
Species in genus: 160+ species: temp n hemisphere, especially Eurasia
Etymology: (Greek: to help, from medicinal uses)

Incl Cheiranthus ; native CA taxa all related to E. capitatum.

Stems 1–several, sometimes much-branched, 5–50 cm
Leaves ± linear to oblanceolate, generally coarsely toothed; hairs 2–several-branched; basal 3–20 cm
Flower: petals 14–26 mm, cream to yellow
Fruit generally strongly ascending (spreading), 4–13 cm, 2–4 mm wide, generally flattened parallel to septum, often tapered to tip; style 0.5–4 mm
Seed 2–4 mm, 1.2–2.5 mm wide; wing at tip and narrow along 1 or both sides
Chromosomes: n=18
Ecology: UNCOMMON. Serpentine outcrops, granitic cliffs, sometimes coastal dunes
Elevation: 0–500 m.
Bioregional distribution: North Coast, n&c Central Coast, San Francisco Bay Area.Fleshy, coastal plants have been called var. crassifolium Rossbach; inland plants approach E. capitatum
Horticultural information: DRN, IRR, SUN: 5, 7, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.
