LIGUSTRUM PRIVET

Shrub, small tree, generally evergreen [ deciduous], generally glabrous [hairy].
Leaf: simple, opposite, blade >> petiole, entire, thick.
Inflorescence: terminal panicle, axes ± puberulent or not.
Flower: bisexual; calyx minute, bell-shaped, 4-toothed, deciduous; corolla funnel-shaped or salverform, 4-lobed, white; stamens 2.
Fruit: generally berry-like drupe, ± 8–10 mm wide, generally purple-black.
Seed: 1–4.
± 45 species: e Asia, Malaysia to Australia, Eur, n Africa.; many cultivated for ornamental leaves. (Classical name of Ligustrum vulgare L.)

1. Anthers ± acute at tip, 2–4 mm; style not exserted from tube; corolla tube 2–3 × (± >) lobes; petiole 3–10 mm ..... L. ovalifolium

1' Anthers ± obtuse at tip, 1–2 mm; style exserted from tube; corolla tube ± < to ± > lobes; petiole 5–20 mm

2. Plant < 3 m; leaf 4–8(10) cm; petiole 5–12 mm; blade ovate-elliptic to obovate; corolla tube ± >= lobes ..... L. japonicum

2' Plant < 10 m; leaf 6–10(12) cm, petiole 10–20 mm, blade ± widely ovate; corolla tube ± <= lobes ..... L. lucidum
