SYNTRICHOPAPPUS

Annual 1–11 cm, generally loosely woolly. Stem: decumbent or erect, generally branched from base or ± throughout. Leaf: alternate (or proximal opposite), simple. Inflorescence: heads 1, radiate; involucre ± cylindric; phyllaries 5–8 in 1 series, spreading in fruit, oblanceolate, acute, alternate phyllaries scarious-margined; receptacle convex, ± knobby or smooth, epaleate. Ray flower: 1 per phyllary; ray 3-lobed, yellow or adaxially white and abaxially ± pink-purple with veins ± red. Disk flower: 10–20+, corolla narrowly funnel-shaped, yellow, glabrous; anther tip narrowly triangular; style tips narrowly triangular. Fruit: narrowly obconic; pappus 0, or of many minutely barbed bristles, slightly widened and fused at base.
