Perennial from ± thick caudex; sap milky.
Stem: ± scapose.
Leaf: basal, entire to pinnately lobed, ± glabrous or white- ciliate.
Inflorescence: heads liguliflorous, 1, erect; outer phyllaries generally ± = inner, glabrous or margins and midrib soft-white-hairy; receptacle flat, epaleate, pitted, glabrous.
Flower: 13–many; ligules much exceeding involucre, yellow, often abaxially ± red, readily withering.
Fruit: cylindric, ± 10-ribbed, tapered distally, not beaked, brown or gray; pappus of many soft bristles or narrow, tapered, bristle-tipped scales.
