S. oregonensis Nutt.
Caudex woody, fibrous-rooted. Stem: ± erect, generally 4–10 dm, glabrous to hairy. Leaf: mostly cauline; most proximal withering early, generally 3–8 cm, oblanceolate to elliptic, acute, ± hairy. Inflorescence: heads ± congested on each branch of flat-topped cluster; peduncle of each head very short; phyllaries ± keeled, oblong, acute, base ± white, tip green, outer ± spreading. Ray flower: generally ± 5; corolla 4–7 mm, white. Disk flower: corolla 3–5 mm; anthers ± purple. Fruit: 2.5–5.5, appressed-hairy; pappus 5–7 mm, innermost longest, tip wider, slightly flattened.
