Glossary and Morphological Characters:

Morphological characters were initially chosen based on observations of collected materials and a general search of appropriate literature. Slides of whole leaves, leaf cross-sections, and stem cross-sections mounted in Hoyer's solution were prepared for each semaphoront. The same samples used in the molecular analyses were scored. Quantitative characters were measured a minimum of five times (from different leaves or cells), and an average of the measurements was used for the final character analysis. Quantitative characters (e.g. cell numbers, leaf dimensions) were plotted to scan for the presence of discrete breaks in the character states and/or to conduct analyses of variances. Characters that were (a) difficult to homologize across numerous taxa, (b) invariant among the taxa included or (c) impossible to discretize into character states (continuously variable quantitative characters) were eliminated. The morphological characters used are presented in below.

Scored using [Reese, 2001 #242] after determining the phylogenetic taxonomy included in the text of this paper.

CANCELLINAE CHARACTERS:

Cancellinae cell columns:
The number of cancellinae cell columns were counted on one side of the midrib for 20 leaves of each semaphoront. The means were plotted and made discrete via gap-coding.

0= 0-7; 1= 11-14; 2=15-19; 3=20-22; 4=24-28; 5=>30

0= 0-7 2=15-19

Cancellinae group size:
Cancellinae group size expressed as a ratio representing the percent of the total leaf length composed of cancellinae. .

0=1/2; 1=1/3; 2=1/4; 3=1/5; 4=1/6; 5=1/7

Cancellinae/Lamina transition:
The shape of the border between the lamina and the cancellinae.

0= U; 1= V; 2=VV; 3=straight; 4= UU; 5= inverted W.

MARGIN CHARACTERS:

Concentration of leaf margin serrations:
Assessed in transverse view.

0 = no serrations; 1 = tip only; 2=down the side of the leaf

  0 = no serrations 1 = tip only 2=down the side of the leaf

Size of leaf margin serrations:
The size of the largest serrations were measured (N=20 per specimen) and divided into two states using using analysis of variance (c = 5.3; c=9.7; p<.01)

0=no serrations; 1=small serrations (= 5um); 2=large serrations (=9um)

  0=no serrations 1=small serrations (= 5um) 2=large serrations (=9um)

Leaf margin taper:
The point along the length of the leaf where the width of the margin expands from less than or equal to 2 cells wide to greater than or equal to 4 cells wide. The states are expressed as a percentage of the whole leaf taken before the 2-4 cell transition is made.

0=1/6; 1=1/4; 2=1/3; 3=1/2; 4=2/3; 5=3/4; 6=5/6

  0=1/6 6=5/6

Leaf margin width (stereome width):
The number of cells in the leaf margin were counted at the widest part of the margin for 20 leaves of each semaphoront. The means were plotted and made discrete via gap-coding.

  0=0-7 4=>30

Margin curvature:
The curvature of the margin assessed in transverse view.

0=plain; 1=involute

LEAF CHARACTERS:

Leaf apex shape:
The most common leaf apex shape for each taxon was characterized. There were no instances in which the shape of the leaf apex varied extensively within a taxon.

1=acute; 2=mucronate; 3=flat; 4=subulate; 5=constricted or tubulose

Leaf undulations:
Only taxa with extensive undulations across most of its leaves were assigned state 1.

Laminar papillae:
This character was assessed in cross-sectional view.

0 = absent; 1 = present

Papillae obscuring the cell outlines:
This character was assessed in transverse view and is an indirect means of assessing the size of the papillae, since only large papillae obscure the cell outlines. The character was derived from Eddy (1988).

0=small; 1=big

  0=small 1=big

Papillae number per cell:
This was scored near the apex of the leaf both in cross section and in flat view.

0 = absent; 1 = one; 2 = two or more

  1 = one 2 = two or more

COSTA CHARACTERS:

Papillae on adaxial surface of costa:
Papillae were never found on the abaxial surface of the costa and therefore this character was not included in the present analysis.

0 = absent; 1= present.

Costal cross-sectional shape
0 = circular; 1 = elliptical

  0 = circular 1 = elliptical

Adaxial epidermis:
The presence of a differentiated epidermal layer on the adaxial surface of the costa.

0 = absent; 1= present


Abaxial epidermis:
The presence of a differentiated epidermal layer on the adaxial surface of the costa.

0 = absent; 1= present


Adaxial stereid band
A region of empty, elongated thick-walled cells on the dorsal side of the guide cells. This character was assessed in cross-sectional view.

0 = absent; 1= present


Abaxial stereid band
A region of empty, elongated thick-walled cells on the ventral side of the guide cells. This character was assessed in cross-sectional view.

0 = absent; 1= present.

GLOSSARY

Costa = The central vein in mosses, the midrib.

Papillae = Minute nipple-like protuberances on the surface of laminal and costal cells, usually formed by uneven deposition of cuticular substance.

Gemmae = a small asexual projection, usually found at or near the leaf apex in clusters. May be a primary means of reproduction in Mitthyridium.

Rhizoids = Filamentous branches outgrowths from the base or apex of leaves (or from stems). Thought to serve for attachment of the moss to its substrate.

Adaxial epidermis/ abaxial epidermis = layers of cells (typically not photosynthetic) on the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of the costa.

Steried bands = Bands of stereid cells that may or may not be present on either side of the guide cells in the costa (assessed in cross sectional view).

Guide cells = enlarged elongated cells in the leaf costa in the same plane as the lamina.
