Service Activities
Research Volunteer for the Ethnobotanical Conservation Organization
for Southeast Asia (ECO-SEA) Davis, CA, 2003-present
This organization is dedicated to long-term research projects that promote economic-sustainability
of traditional practices in indigenous communities in Southeast Asia, with a
particular focus on Indonesia. I have assisted with the maintenance of a herbarium
database, fundraising, and public awareness events.
Volunteer for the Jepson Herbarium Public Programs, 2002-present
I have assisted with the organization, preparation and implementation of four
weekend workshops around California for the local botanical community.
Curriculum development for Richmond High School (sponsored by the
National Science Foundation's GK-12 program), 2003-2004
I developed a year-long curriculum incorporating a natural history program into
a pre-existing 10th grade General Biology class and a 12th grade Environmental
Science class and led three weekend field trips to research stations in Northern
California.
Curriculum development for the Department of Integrative Biology,
UC Berkeley, 2002
I designed an ecology laboratory exercise for the Biology 1B General Biology
course. The exercise was reviewed by a panel of faculty and published in the
2003-2004 and 2004-2005 laboratory manuals for use by 650 students per semester.
The exercise introduced students to a variety of California plants and their
habitats and emphasized how biotic and abiotic environmental factors lead to
plant adaptation and evolution.
