March 17th, 2005 at UC Berkeley,
** Note that this is a Thursday **

This will be a very special evening, featuring David L. Hull, Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University.

Rather than give a formal talk, he will be responding impromptu to a series of questions from a graduate student panel being organized by Eric Harris. The topics will range across evolutionary biology, touching on Professor Hull's diverse interests in the theory of natural selection, species concepts, and history & sociology of science (for his publication list see: http://etss.net/evolution/reviews/hull/david_hull_publications.htm).

The BABs meeting will be begin at 7:00 in room 2040 in the Valley Life Sciences Building, UC Berkeley (see map at: http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/ABCD123.html).

Rather than the usual hosted dinner and drinks, we will be dining at the
Mandarin Garden, 2025 Shattuck Ave, near the corner of Shattuck Ave. and
University Ave. (Shattuck is divided and this is the eastern most lanes with north-bound traffic), just one block west of campus (see mapquest.com). Dinner will happen from 5:15 - 6:45 pm. The restaurant has both standard and vegetarian items, which you can order right off the menu. If you plan to eat at this restaurant with the group please send Brent Mishler <bmishler at calmail.berkeley.edu> a note by 14 March so he can make reservations for the right number of people.

FYI, Dr. Hull will also be giving the Integrative Biology Seminar from
4:00 - 5:00pm that same day in the same room (2040 VLSB), on the topic of "Science as a Process revisited." This will be an update of his important 1988 book: Science as a Process: An Evolutionary Account of the Social and Conceptual Development of Science. So plan on joining us before dinner for this talk also; we'll head over to the Mandarin Garden right afterwards.
