Moss Data Availablity Matrix

** Note that this represents a very preliminary draft. Not all columns are included and many entries are incomplete. Priority assignments are considered provisional. We welcome any and all feedback (send to clafarge@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca).

The families are listed alphabetically within the classes following Vitt (1984), Vitt et al. (1998). Vitt's classification of the genera has been modified for a number of families: Pottiaceae Zander (1983), Rhacitheciaceae (Goffinet 1997), Fabroniaceae (Buck 1981).

This Matrix includes 5 levels of priority:

selected taxa to represent the major lineages of mosses (classes)
taxa to represent the orders or suborders, taxa easily sampled (17)
30 major families represented
All major families (84) represented by 2 species
Monotypic families, all families represented

The exemplars for the first two categories were chosen based on ease of identification and sampling. The taxa for the next three categories were selected on either their presumed basal phylogenetic position, lack of taxonomic problems, or widespread distribution. Any modifications to the selection of taxa to represent the various families or to priority level are welcomed.

For the morphological data, preliminary columns have been outlined and some sample entries are shown (under the peristome development and blepharoplast columns) for how the entries should look. We would greatly appreciate any suggestions and additions for this part of the matrix.

**Note: The accession numbers are placed in the same order as the columnar order of genomic regions.
